The Pastry and Cookie menu

Here at Ginger and Pickles, our menu of pastries and cookies is a collection of classic treats from around the world. Each has its own, unique story, and we bring a focus on using the finest ingredients in each.

Croissant (France)

A classic French pastry known for its beautiful crescent shape and light, airy, layered interior. Our croissants are meticulously crafted to achieve a crisp, flaky crust and a rich, buttery flavor that melts in your mouth.

While it is most associated with France, it is believed to have originated in Austria as the "kipfel”. The croissant was popularized in France in the 19th century and has since become a symbol of French baking.

Key Ingredients – Unbleached flour, European-style butter, sugar, salt, and yeast.

Pain au Chocolat (France)

A decadent twist on the classic croissant, this flaky, layered pastry is rolled around a generous bar of rich, dark chocolate. The careful balance of buttery pastry and melted chocolate makes for an irresistible treat.

The name literally translates to "chocolate bread" and is a beloved French breakfast pastry. It follows the same historical path as the croissant, with the addition of chocolate. Within France, it is the subject of contention over the name.

Key Ingredients – Unbleached flour, European-style butter, dark chocolate, sugar, salt, and yeast.

Lemon Cookie or Lemon Bar

A zesty and refreshing treat with a buttery, crunchy hazelnut crust and a bright, tangy lemon curd filling. It's the perfect balance of sweet and tart, with a delightful texture contrast.

Lemon bars are a staple of American and European baking, celebrated for their simple yet satisfying flavor profile. They are often served at gatherings and as a light dessert.

Key Ingredients – Unbleached flour, hazelnuts, butter, sugar, eggs, and fresh lemons.

Stollen (Germany)

A traditional German fruit bread, often enjoyed during the Christmas season. Our Stollen is a dense, buttery loaf filled with rum-soaked dried fruits, candied citrus peel, and a ribbon of rich marzipan in the center. It's finished with a dusting of powdered sugar.

Originating in Germany, Stollen has a history dating back to the Middle Ages. Starting as a rather plain bread fitting for the Advent season, it gradually became richer and more decadent. The shape is said to represent the baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes.

Key Ingredients – Unbleached flour, butter, dried fruits (raisins, currants), candied citrus peel, marzipan, yeast, and spices like cardamom and cinnamon.

Danish Pastry (Denmark)

A classic flaky pastry with a rich, buttery taste, artfully crafted into various shapes and filled with a variety of delicious fillings. Our offerings include sweet fruit jams, creamy cheese fillings, and other seasonal delights.

The Danish pastry, or wienerbrød, has its roots in Vienna, Austria, but was perfected in Denmark during a bakers' strike in the 19th century when Austrian bakers were brought in to share their techniques.

Key Ingredients – Unbleached flour, butter, eggs, sugar, and various fruit, cream cheese, or nut fillings.

Baklava (Greece/Turkey)

A rich, sweet pastry made from layers of thin, flaky phyllo dough. Each layer is generously brushed with melted butter and filled with a mixture of finely chopped nuts, then soaked in a sweet honey and spice syrup.

Baklava has a long and debated history, with variations found throughout the Middle East and Mediterranean. Both Greece and Turkey claim it as their own, but its roots likely trace back to the Assyrian Empire.

Key Ingredients – Phyllo dough, butter, a blend of nuts (pistachios, walnuts, almonds), honey, and spices like cinnamon and cardamom.

Brownies

A dense, fudgy, and intensely chocolatey square. Our brownies have a crackled top and a rich, moist interior. We offer them both plain for the chocolate purist and with a sprinkle of nuts for a delightful crunch.

The brownie is an American invention, first appearing in cookbooks in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The first documented brownie recipe was in the Fannie Farmer Cookbook in 1896.

Key Ingredients – High-quality chocolate or cocoa powder, butter, sugar, eggs, and flour.

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie

A wholesome and twist on a classic, combining the hearty texture of rolled oats with the rich, comforting flavor of chocolate chips. The oats provide a chewy texture and a nutty flavor that perfectly complements the sweet chocolate.

The addition of oats to the traditional chocolate chip cookie came from a desire for a healthier, more substantial cookie. It's a popular variation that has become a staple in its own right.

Key Ingredients – Unbleached flour, rolled oats, butter, sugar, eggs, and semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

The quintessential American cookie. Our classic chocolate chip cookies are baked to perfection, with a slightly crisp edge and a soft, chewy center loaded with melting chocolate chips.

Invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in the 1930s at the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts, the chocolate chip cookie quickly became a national phenomenon.

Key Ingredients – Unbleached flour, butter, sugar, eggs, and semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Donuts

These fried dough pastries are a light, airy treat, offered with a classic glaze or a variety of delicious fillings.

While fried dough has been a part of many cultures for centuries, the modern donut is thought to have been brought to America by Dutch settlers. The hole in the middle was added later to ensure even cooking.

Key Ingredients – Unbleached flour, yeast, sugar, eggs, milk, and various glazes or fillings.

Muffins

A soft, moist, and quick-to-bake pastry that is a perfect start to any morning. Our muffins are loaded with a variety of delicious flavors, from the classic burst of fresh blueberries to the satisfying richness of chocolate chips.

Muffins have a long history, with their name possibly derived from the German word muffen (small cake). The modern American muffin is a type of quick bread that became popular in the 19th century.

Key Ingredients – Unbleached flour, sugar, baking powder, eggs, milk, butter, and various fruit or chocolate fillings.

Scones

A slightly sweet, tender quick bread with a crumbly texture. Our scones are a perfect companion to tea or coffee, and we offer them in classic flavors like blueberry, strawberry, lemon, or with decadent chocolate chips.

Scones originated in Scotland and were traditionally made with oats and cooked on a griddle. They gained popularity in England when afternoon tea became fashionable.

Key Ingredients – Unbleached flour, butter, sugar, baking powder, milk, and various fruit or chocolate additions.

Cinnamon Rolls

A soft, tender, and sweet roll swirled with a generous filling of cinnamon and brown sugar. Topped with a classic, creamy icing, it is the ultimate comforting treat.

While variations exist across the globe, the cinnamon roll as we know it is often associated with Sweden, where it is known as kanelbulle. It gained immense popularity in North America in the 20th century.

Key Ingredients – Unbleached flour, yeast, butter, sugar, cinnamon, and cream cheese or powdered sugar for the icing.

Madeleine Cookies

A delicate, shell-shaped French sponge cake cookie with a distinctive hump on one side. They are known for their light, airy texture and a subtle, buttery flavor, often with a hint of lemon.

Madeleines are said to have originated in the Lorraine region of France. They were famously immortalized in Marcel Proust's novel In Search of Lost Time, where the taste of a madeleine triggers a flood of childhood memories.

Key Ingredients – Unbleached flour, butter, sugar, eggs, and a touch of lemon zest.
